Hailing from India, Andar Bahar is one of the most simple yet unique card game you’ll encounter anywhere in the world. Also referred to as Katti or Mangatha, Andar Bahar stands on the pedestal as one of India’s most popular card game. 

Traditionally, Andar Bahar can be played without any real money. It follows a simple set of rules and any number of players can join the game. A quick round can last up to just 5 minutes and doesn’t require any tables, chips or wheels, unlike other popular table games. Andar Bahar: Game Terms to Remember

There are only two terms you need to know before playing Andar Bahar:

Andar - There are two boxes on the table where the cards are placed. Andar refers to the box positioned on the left side of the player. The word ‘Andar’ means ‘inside’ in Hindi.

Bahar - Bahar refers to the other box on the table on the player’s right side. The word ‘Bahar’ means ‘outside’ in Hindi. 

Andar Bahar: The Rules of the Game

Similar to other casino table games, Andar Bahar relies heavily on the player’s luck and chance. A single deck of 52 cards is used for the game. The objective of the game is simple and easy to remember: the player must correctly guess and select the position of the main card between the Andar and Bahar. To simplify, the odds of winning are split into an even 50/50. 

Here are the steps on how to play Andar Bahar:

1. The dealer cuts the deck and one card out of the deck is chosen as the main card. This card will be visible to the player. 
2. The player has to place a bet on whether a card with the same value as the main card will appear on the left (Andar) or on the right (Bahar) after the dealer has shuffled the cards.
3. After the player chooses between Andar and Bahar, all the cards are shuffled thoroughly. The main card remains in the space between the boxes of Andar and Bahar.
4. Before the dealer deals the cards again, the player can place a final or additional bet.
5. The dealer then deals the cards face-up alternatively in each of the boxes. The dealing starts with Andar if the first card drawn is a black suit. If the first card drawn is from the red suit, the dealing starts from Bahar
6. When a card of the same face value as the main card lands in either one of the boxes, the round ends and the outcome is determined.
7. If the identical card lands on the correct box the player betted on, the player’s winnings are doubled. Consequently, if the card falls on the wrong box, the player loses the wager to the dealer.

How to play Andar Bahar

Chips

Andar Bahar offers different denominations of 0.5, 1, 5, 25 and 100 to offer you a variety of the wagers you want to place. The chips that you are allowed to use during the round depend on your wager and bankroll.

First round: The Joker Card

You have to bet on the value of the Joker Card between the following choices during the first part of the game:

• Below 8 (2 to 7)
• Exactly 8
• Above 8 (9 to A).

The objective is to get the value right to earn a payout. Additionally, you can also place side bets for the first round by guessing the card suit the Joker Card would be as listed below:

• Hearts
• Diamonds
• Clubs
• Spades.

Once all bets are placed, press the deal button. You can also clear the reset button if you’re not satisfied with your bet placements.

Second Round: Andar or Bahar

Whether you get the first round right or not, the game will proceed to the second after the Joker Card is dealt. The positions on either side of the Joker will open with the left one for Andar and the right for Bahar.
